Mrs Tricklewood

Nine years of rest left before peace.
Ray, Dora, Frank and Peter watched
At her bed like bored angels;
Mrs. J. G. Whitney was engaged domestically,
Soon to announce her fourth’s second
Or second’s fourth
Methodist.

Near a year of failing before Mrs. Wood failed
To gaze at Mary’s tilted head anew.
Mrs. T. Wood. Tricklewood.
Silas called her Ellen. Like her pa.
Made in Paxton, she shrugged as she glimpsed two wars.

Lucinda, her ma, was thought to be infatuated
With epic landscapes.
